IS THIS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Who Is Triple P For?

Triple P was designed to work for any family — from parents wanting a head start with a new baby to parents managing serious behavioral concerns. It may be right for you if:

  • You're dealing with tantrums, defiance, arguing, or "no" battles that feel constant

  • Sibling conflict, mealtime struggles, bedtime battles, or screen-time fights are wearing everyone down

  • You feel like you're constantly reacting to your child's behavior instead of guiding it

  • You and a co-parent aren't on the same page about rules or discipline

  • Your child's behavior is affecting school, friendships, or family relationships

  • You're a new or expecting parent who wants a solid foundation from the start

  • You're parenting a teen and want to keep communication open through a harder stretch

  • Stress, your own mood, or a difficult family season is making consistent parenting hard to sustain

Triple P isn't a one-size-fits-all script. It's a flexible toolkit you and your therapist adapt to your child, your family, and what you're actually facing at home.

THE APPROACH

How Triple P Works

Triple P — the Positive Parenting Program — was developed at the University of Queensland and is built on the idea that most difficult child behavior is learned and maintained through everyday family interactions, which means it can also be reshaped through more effective ones. Rather than offering generic advice, Triple P teaches parents 17 core, research-backed strategies organized around five key principles: creating a safe and engaging environment, creating a positive learning environment, using assertive discipline, having realistic expectations, and taking care of yourself as a parent.

Triple P is delivered as a multi-level system, ranging from brief tip-sheet-style guidance for a single concern up to more intensive, individually tailored programs for families facing more significant behavioral challenges or additional stressors like co-parenting conflict or high family stress. At Flatland Counseling, we most often deliver a structured, one-on-one program of roughly 8–10 sessions, working through the causes of your child's behavior, setting specific goals, and practicing strategies together — with real-world practice between sessions so skills actually stick at home, not just in the therapy room.

Triple P has been evaluated in more than 100 studies across more than 25 countries over more than three decades, with consistent evidence of improvements in child behavior, parenting confidence, and family relationships. It's used with parents of children from infancy through the teen years, and can be adapted for children with anxiety, ADHD, developmental disabilities, or other additional needs.

THE PROCESS

What to Expect

Step 1: Reach Out

We'll match you with a Triple P-trained therapist. Many clients are seen within 1–2 weeks. Let us know what's happening at home so we can prioritize the right fit.

Step 2: Your First Session

Early sessions focus on understanding your child's behavior and your family's routines, then setting specific, realistic goals you actually want to work toward.

Step 3: Start Making Progress

Each session introduces a strategy you practice at home before the next visit. Most parents notice steadier routines and fewer power struggles within a few weeks of consistent practice.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

What ages is Triple P designed for? -- Triple P covers the full span of childhood, from infancy through the teen years, with different program tracks suited to each stage. At Flatland Counseling, we work with parents of young children, school-age kids, and teens, adapting strategies to fit your child's developmental stage.

How is Triple P different from general parenting advice? -- Unlike generic tips, Triple P is a structured, research-tested program built around specific, teachable strategies that are practiced and adapted with a trained provider. Your therapist helps you identify which of the 17 core strategies fit your family's specific situation, and gives you feedback as you put them into practice — rather than leaving you to figure it out from an article or a book alone.

How many sessions will we need? -- Most families complete a structured program of roughly 8–10 sessions, delivered weekly. Families managing more complex behavior, or navigating additional stress like co-parenting conflict, may benefit from a longer or more intensive course. Your therapist will tailor the pace and length to your family's needs.

Do both parents or caregivers need to attend? -- It's not required, but it helps. Triple P works best when caregivers apply strategies consistently, so we strongly encourage co-parents, grandparents, or other regular caregivers to be involved when possible. If that's not feasible, one parent can still make meaningful progress and share strategies with other caregivers at home.

Is Triple P only for kids with diagnosed behavior disorders? -- No. Triple P was built as a multi-level system precisely so it can help any family — from parents wanting light guidance on a single issue, to families managing significant, longstanding behavioral difficulties. You don't need a diagnosis to benefit; wanting a calmer, more consistent household is reason enough.

Is Triple P available via telehealth? -- Yes. Sessions translate well to video, and strategies can be reviewed and practiced together over telehealth just as effectively as in person. We offer telehealth Triple P sessions to clients anywhere in Texas.

Does Triple P work if my child has anxiety, ADHD, or a disability? -- Yes. Triple P has adaptations for children with anxiety, ADHD, developmental disabilities, and other additional needs, and the core strategies can be tailored to fit your child's specific profile. If your child is also receiving individual therapy, Triple P works well alongside it, giving parents tools that reinforce what your child is learning in their own sessions.

What's the evidence behind Triple P? -- Triple P is one of the most extensively researched parenting programs in the world, with more than 100 studies and multiple large-scale meta-analyses conducted over more than three decades, showing consistent improvements in child behavior, parenting practices, parenting confidence, and family relationships across short- and long-term follow-up.

How do I get started? -- You can reach out through our contact page or click the Get Started button to request an appointment. Taking that first step is often the hardest part — I'm glad you're here.
