How we help with depression
Our therapists take an evidence-based, person-centered approach to depression treatment. We start where you are — not where a textbook says you should be. Sessions are collaborative, and your therapist will tailor the work to your specific patterns and goals.
For many clients, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) forms the backbone of treatment, helping you identify the thought loops that feed depression and replace them with more realistic and factual beliefs. An emphasis on mindfulness and behavioral patterns are helpful and result in improved outcomes.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills — including distress tolerance and emotional regulation — are woven in when anxiety shows up alongside intense emotional swings or interpersonal difficulty. Most clients see meaningful progress within 8–12 sessions, though we'll move at whatever pace is right for you.

What is depression, and how do I know if what I'm feeling is more than just sadness? Depression is more than feeling sad or having a rough week. It's a persistent experience that can affect how you think, feel, sleep, eat, and function day to day. If you've been feeling hopeless, exhausted, disconnected, or unlike yourself for two weeks or longer, it's worth talking to someone. You don't have to wait until things feel "bad enough" to reach out.
What does depression actually feel like? Depression shows up differently for different people. Some people feel a heavy sadness they can't shake. Others describe it as numbness, irritability, or just going through the motions without really feeling anything. It can look like withdrawing from the people you love, losing interest in things that used to matter, struggling to get out of bed, or feeling like a burden to those around you.
What causes depression? There's rarely one single cause. Depression can be influenced by life experiences, trauma, significant loss or change, chronic stress, relationship struggles, hormonal shifts, or a family history of depression. Understanding what's contributing to yours is part of the work we do together in therapy.

Do I need to be on medication to get better? Not necessarily. Many people experience significant relief through therapy alone. That said, medication can be a helpful part of treatment for some people, especially when depression is more severe. If we feel it's worth exploring, I'm happy to talk through that option and refer you to a trusted provider who can help.
How long does it take to feel better? Everyone's timeline is different. Some people begin to notice shifts within the first few sessions, while others need more time to work through deeper layers. My goal is always to help you make meaningful progress at a pace that feels right for you — not to rush the process or put you in a box.
I've felt this way for so long that I'm not sure I remember what "better" even feels like. Is it still possible to feel better? Absolutely. This is one of the most common things I hear from clients who've been living with depression for a long time. Feeling this way for years can make it hard to imagine anything different, but that doesn't mean change isn't possible. Healing is possible for you, even if it doesn't feel that way right now.
What happens in a first session for depression? The first session is really about getting to know you — what you're experiencing, what's been going on in your life, and what you're hoping to get out of therapy. There's no pressure to share everything right away. We go at your pace, and I want you to leave that first session feeling heard and clear on what the process can look like for you.
Do you work with postpartum depression? Yes. Postpartum depression is a specific experience that deserves specialized care and understanding, and it's something we're equipped to support at Flatland.
